At the recent BADC AGM, all those present discussed the following proposal and voted in favour of it becoming compulsory. The committee would be happy to hear the thoughts of all members on this proposal so that they can be discussed at the next meeting.
“As our teaching membership is spread far and wide throughout the UK and abroad, it has always been a challenge to keep teachers informed of any syllabus changes or developments in pedagogy. The Committee believe it is essential for all teachers to engage in continuous professional development to ensure best practice and maintain high standards. This proposal reflects the requirement in further and higher education for all vocational teachers to undertake recognised skills and knowledge updating activities.
The Academy already provides the annual ‘Greenwood Teachers’ Workshop’ for all BADC Teachers and probationers to learn new skills, syllabus updates and teaching methods but over the past two years only a handful of dedicated teachers have attended.
In the interest of maintaining high standards and ensuring best practice, the Committee required that all BADC Teachers attend one workshop per year and deliver a workshop session (up to one-and-a-half hours in length) once every two years of a current BADC weapon syllabus. This will provide the opportunity for teachers to share good practice, innovation and teaching styles as well as update skills and knowledge.
To make these workshops as accessible as possible we are spreading them more evenly thoughout the year and offering them on Sundays as well as Saturdays. We regret that all workshops are currently held in London (the majority of BADC membership are within commutable distance). Teachers further afield are eligible to claim reasonable travel expenses in order to attend one workshop per annum.
If you genuinely cannot attend, for example, because you reside abroad, then alternative arrangements will be provided.
The Committee is currently in process of exploring appropriate sanctions in the instance of continued non attendance.
We thank you in advance for your help in this matter.”
